Of course, we are always looking for new products for our range. This search recently led us to the Riedel company in Austria to take part in a wine glass tasting. But what is so special about a red wine glass? We were more than surprised!

The glass makes the difference

Of course, the quality of the wine is the main factor in the taste experience. But during the wine glass tasting, we learned how incredibly important the right glass is for enjoying the best wines. With a high level of expertise and many aha moments, the experts at Riedel showed us what is important when it comes to wine glasses. Because in addition to the basic shape of the glass, the material, wall thickness and transparency also play a role. Good glasses must be as colorless and thin as possible in order to be able to capture both the color and the temperature of the wine as accurately as possible.

About the architecture of the wine glass

Basically, there are four sensory impressions in wine that must be communicated by the right wine glass, namely the scent, the texture, the taste and the aftertaste. The shape of the wine glass is therefore specific to the grape variety and captures the corresponding impressions optimally. The connoisseur differentiates the shape of the goblet according to the shape, size and diameter of the glass rim. A red wine glass, for example, is rather voluminous and bulbous and has a wide rim. This suppresses acid and tannin and allows the wine to develop its aroma in the glass. A carefully ground rim allows the wine to flow gently over the tongue.

White wine glasses, on the other hand, are more oval and appear more delicate. The classic champagne glass, for example, emphasizes the bubbles and the scent. Glasses that mask the alcohol and emphasize the acidity are suitable for strong white wines. Light white wines should be drunk from glasses with an outward-curved rim, as this emphasizes the fruit. During the tasting, we were able to see for ourselves how big and clear the differences are and how much even a good wine can suffer from the wrong presentation.

Some professional tips for enjoying wine

Of course, we received some great tips from the local wine experts that we would like to pass on to you. For example, make sure the wine is at the right temperature and do not overcool white wines or sparkling wine. Contrary to popular belief, red wines are served at room temperature. Give the wine room to breathe. Do not put more than 9-15 cl in the glass! If there are stains on the glass, use white vinegar to clean it and, above all, soft water to avoid deposits. When polishing the glass, always use two cloths, one in each hand.
