The company Zyliss was founded in 1951 by the bicycle mechanic and inventor Karl Zysset (1907–1988) in Lyss, a small town near Bern. Zysset invented the garlic press in 1948 and the salad spinner in 1978, and registered many further patents throughout his career. The food mincer, introduced in 1953 and later known as the ZICK-ZICK, became a much-copied classic.
